SIDLEY II 159 (4pts)
STEYNING II 161-1 (30pts)
SIDLEY suffered a heavy home defeat in 2nd XI Division Two of the Sussex Cricket League on Saturday. The local club’s innings was a tale of batsmen getting starts without being able to convert before the last six wickets went down for 35 runs. Their main contributors were the impressive Craig Ramsden (41), Ian Vye (26), Jamie Ramsden (22), Chris Milton (22), Dan Auer (12) and Trevor Ramsden (12). Auer picked up Sidley’s only wicket in the field after tea, removing Simon McNiff for 24 with the score on 39. Ben Ferns (73 not out) and Dave Browning (51 not out) guided Steyning home in 29.2 overs despite some good fielding by Rachel Dangerfield. The match ball was sponsored by Village Cleaners.
SIDLEY III 131 (8pts)
NEWICK NOMADS 132-6 (30pts)
THE thirds of Sidley made a gallant fist of defending a modest total in the East Sussex Cricket League on Saturday.Sidley kept their hosts waiting for 38.1 of a possible 43 overs before they could finally celebrate victory in this Division 11 clash. Simon Newstead (1-62) and Adam Wickens (4-37) toiled away for 17 and 13 overs respectively on a warm afternoon, all four of Wickens’ victims succumbing to his clever slower ball. Garth Baker chipped in with 1-15 from six overs and Sidley might have done better still had they clung on to two or three difficult catches. A lack of runs with the bat was their real downfall, though, on a wicket of low bounce at the well presented home of Laughton Cricket Club. Sidley were 97-9 at one stage before Ross Settles (38 not out) and Neil Watson (25) gave them a couple of batting points. Bob Goodsell and Robin Cooper made 17 and 13 respectively. The match ball was sponsored by Brewers Decorating Materials.
SIDLEY staged a successful cricket week with three games at their Gullivers base on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, last week.First up was a closely-contested and good-spirited encounter against the Hastings & District Cricket Association. Sidley scored 237-7 batting first thanks in the main to 110 from Craig Ervine, plus 59 from Malcolm Johnson and the 24 of Paul Brookes. But Manjot Singh guided the guests home with an unbeaten 116 after Jeremy Wassell (56) and Gary Johnson (17) had got them off to a decent start.
Brighton Nomads provided the opposition for the middle fixture and they kicked things off by rattling up 214-7 from 46.5 overs. Malcolm Johnson and Ervine both made 58 as Sidley got home on 217-8 helped by cameos from Gary Johnson (21 not out), Craig Ramsden (15), Cavan O’Connor (11) and Ross Settles (10).
The Tivoli Auto Services-sponsored three days were concluded by another good match against a Chairman’s XI. Sidley opened proceedings with 231 courtesy of runs from Singh (78), Gary Johnson (54) and Craig Ervine (37), although they were checked by a great performance from Jack Taylor (4-35). Dan Auer (76) and Kevin Kempthorne (36) top-scored in a response which realised 190. Chairman, Ian Mollart, wished to thank all concerned for their participation.
