Players' Meeting MInutes - March 2008

SIDLEY CRICKET CLUB

Minutes of the players’ meeting held on Monday March 3, 2008 at Sidley Sports & Social Club.

PRESENT: Ian Mollart (chairman), Andy Pearson (vice-chairman), Mrs Jenny Mollart (treasurer), Trevor Ramsden (fixture secretary).

Committee members: Peter King, Simon Newstead, Jamie Ramsden, Ross Settles.

Also present: Dan Auer, Garth Baker, Dane Capon, Peter Capon, Mark Gransden, Chris Hunnisett, Kevin Kempthorne, Alex Nicholas, Cavan O’Connor jnr, June O’Connor, Paul O’Connor, Craig Ramsden, Steve Ramsden, Tyrone Wildman, Scott Woodroffe.

1 APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE
Apologies were received from Phil Belfield, Robin Cooper and Ian Reynolds.

2 FIRST TEAM CAPTAIN
Mr Auer had stepped down from the position to take up a job on the Isle of Wight and a replacement was therefore needed. Mr Trevor Ramsden read out a letter sent to the committee by Mr Wildman suggesting Mr King be appointed captain with Mr Wildman vice-captain.

Mr King asked if anybody from the committee had spoken to vice-captain Mr Reynolds to see if he was interested in carrying out the role. Mr Ramsden said he thought Mr Reynolds was going to struggle to play this season due to work commitments. Mr King said it was not proper to do anything else until Mr Reynolds had been consulted. An attempt was made to contact Mr Reynolds by telephone, although this was unsuccessful.

Mr Settles stressed the need to have a Plan B in place should Mr Reynolds not be prepared to do it. Mr Mollart asked Mr King if he would be prepared to accept the position. Mr King stated that, in the event of Mr Reynolds being unwilling to take up the post, he himself would be prepared to captain the side on the field but couldn’t commit to the organisational side of things, and that he would need a certain undertaking of support from the committee as a whole.

Mr Woodroffe said he felt more people would be willing to fill the post if they had someone to do the organising. Mr Mollart said whoever is captain, in his opinion, will only have to deal with on-field affairs. Mr Ramsden warned that a captain not picking the side himself may not get the side he wants and that there are likely to be many conversations between captain and selector. Mr King asked if a tea lady and scorer had been sorted out.

Mr Mollart said hopefully Mrs O’Connor will provide teas for the first few games before Mrs Jackie Ramsden returns. Mrs Mollart will score the home fixtures, and players from the colts’ section are expected to score away matches. Mr Mollart would ring Mr Reynolds the next day and report back to the committee in the next couple of days.

3 OVERSEAS PLAYER
Mr King confirmed that Mr Elliot Bullock will be the club’s overseas player for the 2008 season and circulated copies of his cricketing CV. He will arrive on Tuesday April 15 and return to his native Australia in mid-September. He’s a qualified coach and will be available for coaching. His police check had come through from Sydney Grammar School. Accommodation is sorted out and part-time work on the ground has been secured. The club will need someone to collect him from the airport - probably around 6.30am.

Mr King had drafted two letters introducing Mr Bullock in a bit more detail, one was hopefully given out at the colts’ meeting and the other was sent to all members. Seven sponsors have so far been found for the player’s personal bonus scheme and a further three are being sought. The club is to fund Mr Bullock’s air fare which is approximately £1,300. Part of his contract is to attend all fundraising functions, colts’ training sessions and home matches, plus away matches where possible.

Mr Mollart urged members to make him feel welcome upon his arrival. Mr Settles said well done to Mr King on facilitating the signing so well.

4 UPCOMING EVENTS
Indoor nets
have been booked for five weeks starting on Tuesday March 18 at Horntye Park Sports Centre, Hastings, from 7-8pm. Mr Mollart thanked Mr Jamie Ramsden for organising indoor nets.

A race night will take place at the club on Friday April 4.

Mr Mollart said he intends to book a fancy dress night on a date to be announced.

Mr Mollart thanked everyone who attended the games’ night on Friday February 15.

The Roy Ransom Trophy will start on Monday April 21.

Mr King and Mr Hunnisett are to stage a quiz night on Good Friday (March 21). Teams of six, £1 per head. 7.30 for 8pm.

5 FIXTURES
The club has once again entered the Bertie Joel Cup, although the opposition is still unknown.
The first and second team’s league fixtures start on Saturday May 3, the thirds begin their matches a fortnight later.

The first team has a friendly against Blackboys on Saturday April 19. Mr Trevor Ramsden has been unable to find opposition for another friendly the following Saturday so the suggestion is to hold an inter-club game.

The first team has been drawn away to Bexhill in the Sussex League’s Twenty20 Cup competition on Sunday July 13.

Colts’ day will take place on Sunday September 7.

Cricket Week will run from Tuesday July 29-Thursday July 31.

Mr Wildman asked Mr Ramsden if he had had any comeback from the Sussex over-50s with regard to playing at Sidley. The answer was ‘no’ and Mr Wildman is to contact Mr Hugh Milner tomorrow.

St Luke’s CC will often use the ground on Sundays when Sidley are playing away from home. Mr Peter Capon asked if St Luke’s players will play for Sidley on Saturdays, to which the answer was ‘yes’.

Midweeks are not that busy at the moment.

Mr Neil Cunningham is to organise a charity day for MS on Sunday August 10.

6 CAPTAINS’ COMMENTS
Mr Steve Ramsden said he needs an umpire and scorer for the second team. Mr Trevor Ramsden said he is taking an umpiring course and hopes to help out on that front this year.
Mr Mollart said players will be given a chance for the third team and they will be picked on ability.

7 THE GROUND
Mr Trevor Ramsden said that everything is going fine with the pitch. He had been asked this year to prepare another five wickets stretching onto the football pitch and work on these will commence once the footballers have finished their season in mid-April. These wickets will be used by St Luke’s and the colts’ section.

Mr Mollart spoke of the need to form a ground committee to carry out work before the start of the 2008 season. A date for the work is to be announced.

Mr Gransden said he has some netting which could be used for the perimeter of the ground.

8 ANY OTHER BUSINESS
Mr Trevor Ramsden said that Mr Dennis Scotcher is no longer willing to sponsor the club to the tune of £500.

Mr Roger Lee and wife Val have pledged £250 worth of sponsorship. They have had letters thanking them for their donation.

Mr Settles had arranged friendlies in Scotland against Prestwick on Tuesday August 19 and Ayr the following day. The idea is to fly up there on the Tuesday morning and back on the Thursday morning. The flight will be an hour in length and at the moment the cost is about £40 return. The overall cost of the trip is expected to be £130-150. He asked those players interested to contact him. It is very much hoped that the squad will be entirely Sidley CC, but players from other clubs might be invited to make up numbers if necessary.

Mr Woodroffe asked players to write down their personal details at the end of the meeting for registration purposes on the Sussex League’s Play Cricket website.

Mr Woodroffe confirmed that the Sussex League handbook had been completed and that there is a meeting on Friday April 18 when the match balls will need to be collected and paid for.

Mr Woodroffe had been looking into the possibility of getting some more cricket shirts done. A batch of Exito shirts are available at around £22 each, while Intersport of Lewes are offering Stuart Surridge shirts at just under £20 each. He asked if it would be worth pressing ahead, Mr Mollart suggested doing so. Those interested are to provide payment at the upcoming indoor net sessions.

Mr Jamie Ramsden thanked everyone who had played under his captaincy for the club’s midweek indoor league team which is currently top of Division Three. Mr Mollart thanked Mr Ramsden for his efforts in running the side.

The meeting closed at 9.10pm.
