Sidley 3rd XI had an important win against their Bexhill opponents at the Sandrock ground yesterday in their venture to win the division.
Bexhill: 147 all out (Andy Pearson 3-38; Jim Stewart 2-41; Craig Ramsden 2-21)
Sidley: 148-8 (Dane Capon 18; Ian Vye 44; Peter Capon 21 n.o.; Craig Ramsden 22)
Although the team recorded this important victory, there is still much to work on. In the Bexhill innings there were 20 extras (11 wides), and in the Sidley innings, several batsmen lost concentration and threw wickets away unnecessarily, leading to an uncomfortable situation at the end where a match that should have been won by six or seven wickets, was very nearly thrown away.
It was due to the patient, experienced batting of Pete Capon, ably supported by the equally-experienced Andy Pearson at the end, that saw us home. The batsmen need to realise that scores of 20 or so are not sufficient to produce convincing victories: they have to concentrate hard, even on a very hot day, and be prepared to bat for 20 overs for much higher individual scores - preferably of 50+.
Still, it was a win - well done, particularly to the bowlers. We are now almost exactly half-way through the season. So far so good.
In passing, the Sandrock pitch was quite dusty, with the ball never really coming on to the bat, as ever, but the outfield has rarely looked better - thank you to the Council!
