Sidley 84 all out (32.2 overs) – 10 points
It was a case of mixed emotions at Claremont School on Saturday as Sidley quickly gained the point they required to secure the Sussex League Division 12 (East) championship, but then suffered the disappointment of losing the last match of the 2018 campaign as Crowhurst bowled a naggingly good line and length on a slow pitch and managed to produce the frustration they were looking for in the Sidley batting. What seemed to be a modest total to chase then turned into something very much more demanding as batsmen lost patience in their attempt to secure the necessary runs.
Earlier, Cavan O’Connor again showed good form with the ball, ending with 3-35 off 9 overs, but pride of place this week went to Trevor Stanley who produced a devastating spell of 4-9 off 5 overs, limiting Crowhurst Park to just 111-9.
The Sidley innings, unusually, never managed to get going this time. Only Dave Coveney (17), Steve Ramsden (27) and Cavan O’Connor (17) made promising starts before falling to the accurate Crowhurst bowling.
Despite the loss on this last day of the season, Sidley, captained by Josh Bull, are to be hugely congratulated on their overall performance in 2018. After several years of uncertainty, the club is now in a strong position, with an expanding playing membership and renewed enthusiasm and optimism among all players, officials and supporters of the club.
