St. Peters 4th XI 166-8 (39.1 overs) - 30 points
With a performance significantly better than in the home tie against St. Peters 4th XI earlier in the season, Sidley were desperately unlucky not to edge home in a very close, exciting match in Brighton, and ended the season as Division 10 runners-up, 10 points behind St. Peters.
Unusually, captain Craig Ramsden lost the toss and Sidley were invited to bat first. After losing Simon Newstead to a run-out early on, Sidley began to build a promising total, reaching 101 before the third wicket fell. Dave Coveney (17), Josh Bull (53), Mark Gransden (26) and Craig Ramsden (26) all played themselves in, but, unfortunately, were unable to take their scores to a higher level and thus provide the home side with a really challenging target. From 101-2, the Sidley momentum fell to 145-8, and eventually 163-9, when a score well in excess of 200 was needed.
In reply, St. Peters found themselves struggling on 42-3, due to some containing bowling from Craig Ramsden (9 overs for 25 runs) and Andy Pearson in particular (2-16 off 10 overs), but Sidley's grip loosened at a crucial stage, allowing St. Peters to build steadily, moving from 91-5 to 137-7, and eventually to 166-8 on the first ball of the final, 40th over.
A disappointment for Sidey to come so close at the final hurdle, but all would agree that it has been a brilliant season, with some highly-enjoyable and entertaining cricket, and great team-work, both on and off the field. Congratulations to Craig and to all who have played a part in this season's success.
