HE hails from the Punjab area on the sub continent, spins a cricket ball like his famous Indian namesake and at 17 years of age is focused on realising a career goal - to play Test cricket for Australia!
Emerging UTS-Balmain all rounder Manjot Singh (pictured) of Eastwood is one out of the box and capable of big things on the Sydney grade cricket scene in 2004-05.
Singh, a Year 11 student at the Kings School Parramatta, joins a select band of schoolboy cricketers to play first grade with the Tigers from 15 year old Archie Jackson - a future Test batsman - who padded up in the top grade for the famous inner-city club in 1924-25 and in recent times former NSW leg-spinner Adrian Tucker, Greg Hayne and Richard Burton.
The talented off-spinner recently bagged three wickets on debut against Manly and 5-46 in a win over Mosman in his two appearances to date in the top grade and looks set for a bright future.
Manjot, a prolific-scoring batsman, also was named in the NSW U/17 representative team to compete at the Australian Championships in Tasmania next year from January 3-14.
Singh earned selection after impressive performances with bat and ball for the Tigers, Emerging Blues and the City U/17s who defeated Country for the Brett Lee Cup in a State selection trial at Bradman Oval in Bowral.
Just like India’s Harbhajan Singh, Manjot is a fierce competitor who has deceived plenty of batsmen with turn, lift and flight and enjoys bowling in tandem with Balmain’s rookie State spinner Jason Krejza.
“Jason has passed on plenty of tips and advice and is a good role model” says the young all rounder who is set to play more first grade on a regular basis when school winds up.
Manjot captains the Kings first grade X1 and will represent NSW All Schools at the Carbine Cup National Schoolboy Championships in Brisbane from December 16-20.
“Trevor Chappell is our assistant coach at Kings and has had a major influence on my career along with the likes of Neil Maxwell, Greg Hayne and Dr Harry Harinath” says Manjot, who played junior cricket with Epping District Club and represented Northern Districts in the NSW Shell inter-district rep series from U/10s before honing his skills in the Balmain A.W Green Shield team for three seasons.
Singh captained the Tigers U/16s last summer and also the Combined Green Shield Second X1 rep side after averaging 101.5 with the bat for the NSW U/15 Emerging Blues.
With 11 centuries under his belt and a top score of 131, Manjot has picked up a gear/bat sponsor in Gunn & Moore - joining a stable that includes English skipper Michael Vaughan, NSW star Dominic Thornely and Victorian David Hussey.
His parents Ravi and Jaspal migrated to Australia several years ago from Chandigarh in India’s Punjab region and Sydney-born Manjot would like to one day return to his family’s place of origin - preferably as a member of a touring Australian cricket side.
