Sidley 3rd XI v. Bells Yew Green 2nd XI (July 15th)
Bells Yew Green 148
Sidley 150-9
Neil Watson was the unlikely hero as the thirds of Sidley hauled themselves off the bottom of East Sussex Division Ten.
The vice-captain, who had batted only twice previously this season, made a timely 14 not out to secure victory from a match Sidley looked like they'd thrown away.
Watson took Sidley past the winning post with 10 runs from four balls, culminating in a boundary through extra-cover on a sun-kissed Saturday afternoon at Gullivers.
He came to the crease after Sidley had collapsed from 84-1 to 135-9. Three wickets fell with the score on 100 and two more went down six runs later.
Ian Northorpe (38) and Jake Beale (26) shared a 60 run stand for the second wicket which had put the home side in complete command.
The BYG innings followed a relatively similar pattern. They were 62-1 at one stage before Andy Pearson (1-22) struck and shortly afterwards Simon Newstead and Northorpe (1-32) took three wickets in 12 balls to make it 78-5.
Newstead continued to chip away at the middle order to finish with 5-35 from 11 overs before Craig Ramsden (3-25) snapped up the last two wickets, the second of which was a marvellous reflex catch behind the stumps from Kevin Kempthorne.
The result means that Sidley have now acquired more 16 points than in the entirety of the 2005 campaign.
